An Art History graduate with a high-quality degree (within the last 12 years) from a Russell Group University in England is sought for this interesting position supporting a final year undergraduate student. This role is part teacher and part logistics manager, and the Tutor should think of her or himself as kind of Educational Personal Assistant, summarising and condensing teaching material to minimise the student’s time without compromising learning, completion and submission of coursework, or preparation for exams. As well as helping on the academic side, the Tutor will be responsible for assisting the student with logistics, including significant driving duties.
The student is a final year undergraduate in Art History and is currently on course for a 2ii. He is also running a successful technology start-up in Russia. As his business has grown it has become increasingly hard for the young entrepreneur to manage the twin demands of his university studies and the running of his rapidly growing company. In order to maintain time availability for both his degree and his business, he is now is splitting his time every week between Russia and England. He has chosen his courses such that all his classes are on Thursday and Friday. He travels to Moscow every Friday evening and returns to London every Wednesday evening, working in Moscow from Saturday to Wednesday.
His courses this term are Art of the Northern Renaissance and Art in Russia and the Soviet Union, and his chosen dissertation subject is Gothic and Neo-Platonic qualities of Donatello's David. The courses for next term are Religious Art, and Worldly Objects: Art, Environment and Materiality.
For the remainder of this term the Tutor will follow a standard weekly schedule as follows:
Wednesday | 9pm to 11pm | Travel to Heathrow, collect rental car*, and meet the student off 11.30pm flight |
12am to 2am | Drive to the student’s hotel while prepping him for his 9am class on Thursday morning
Thursday | 11.30am to 6.30pm | 6 hours of work time with the student |
Friday | 11.30am to 6.30pm | 6 hours of work time with the student |
7pm to 9pm | Drive the student to Heathrow (the student’s flight departs 10.30pm)
9pm to 11pm | Return rental car* and travel home
Saturday | Weekend/Off | |
Sunday | Weekend/Off | |
Monday | As needed | Preparation of teaching materials for the student, plus any logistics such as hotel bookings, car rental etc. |
Tuesday | As needed | Email the student detailed summaries of lecture notes and other research summaries as needed, by 5pm UK time. |
*If the tutor has her or his own car then she or he can use it in lieu of a rental car, and will be able to claim
expenses of £0.45p per mile for such use. It is approximately 110 miles from Heathrow to the university. This mileage
rate includes fuel.
The Tutor’s week will start by travelling to Heathrow airport to pick up a rental car (unless the tutor chooses to use her or his own car) and then pick the student up from his flight from Russia. The Tutor will then drive approximately two hours, to the student's hotel, prepping him for his 9-11am seminar on Thursday morning, while driving. After the student finishes class on Thursday and Friday, the Tutor and the student will study for an average of 6 hours a day, with breaks as needed. On Friday, class is 9am-11am and again study will be for 6 hours afterwards.
On Friday evening, the Tutor will drive the student back to Heathrow in good time for his 10.30pm flight, and then travel home.
Monday and Tuesday will be spent studying the reading materials for the week ahead and help in the preparation of summary documents for the student to allow swift assimilation of the required information.
Next term the schedule may change, with the student being in Russia at the end of the week for 3 days, and therefore in the UK on Monday and Tuesday instead of Thursday and Friday. This will obviously affect the days in the UK and the specific travel days, but the structure of the schedule will remain the same.
The Tutor should expect to work as per the table above. She or he will be entitled to at least two consecutive days off per week, and given the fixed student schedule, the Tutor will be able to manage their own time from Saturday until Wednesday evening.
This contract will run until the final examination are completed (and it likely that the above timetable will need adjustment around the exams). No additional vacation allowance accrues on this contract.
A stipend of £200 per week will be paid to the Tutor to cover accommodation, and a further £80 for meals. It is not expected that the Tutor stay in the same hotel as the student nor that the Tutor and student will eat together. If the student does ask the the tutor to eat together as part of the tutoring time, the Tutor will pay for her or his meals from this stipend.
It is essential that the Tutor is a non-smoker and leads a healthy lifestyle.
